ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK)
An abdominoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the abdomen.
During an abdominoplasty, excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen. The connective tissue in the abdomen (fascia) is usually tight and sutured. The remaining skin is then repositioned to create a more toned look.
You may choose to have a tummy tuck if you have excess fat or skin around the navel area or a weak lower abdominal wall. A tummy tuck can also improve your body image.
Abdominoplasty can also be performed at the same time as other cosmetic body contouring procedures, such as breast implant.
PREPARATION
Initially, you will talk to your plastic surgeon about tummy tuck. During the first visit, your plastic surgeon will:
Examine your medical history – Be prepared to answer questions about current and past medical conditions. Talk about any medications you are taking or have recently taken, as well as any surgeries you may have had.
Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medicines. If your desire for tummy tuck is related to weight loss, your doctor will ask you detailed questions about weight gain and loss.
Take a physical exam – To determine your treatment options, your doctor will examine your abdomen. Your doctor may take pictures of your abdomen for medical records.
Discuss your expectations – Explain why you want tummy tuck and what you hope for after the procedure. Make sure you understand the benefits and risks, including healing. Keep in mind that previous abdominal operations may limit your results.
POST-PROCEDURE
After abdominoplasty, the abdominal incision and belly button will probably be covered with surgical dressing. Small tubes may be placed along the incision site to drain excess blood or fluid.

You will probably feel moderate pain, which will be controlled by medication. It is normal to have swelling in the surgical area.
The drains could be left in place for a few days after surgery. Your doctor will show you how to empty and take care of your drains. Your surgeon may also prescribe a medicine to thin your blood for a short time after your tummy tuck.
You will wear supportive abdominal clothing for about six weeks. This helps prevent fluid buildup and provides abdominal support while you heal. Your doctor will explain how to care for your scar.
