CORNEAL TRANSPLANT
A corneal transplant (keratoplasty) is a surgical procedure to replace part of your cornea with corneal tissue from a donor. The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface of the eye, which accounts for much of the eye's focusing power.
A corneal transplant can restore vision, reduce pain, and improve the appearance of a damaged or diseased cornea.
A corneal transplant is most often used to restore sight to a person with a damaged cornea. A corneal transplant can also relieve pain or other symptoms associated with corneal disease
MEDICINE PARK
WHY CHOOSE
TRANSPLANT PREPARATION
Before the corneal transplant operation, you will go through the following steps:
-
An eye exam: Your ophthalmologist will check for possible conditions that may cause complications after surgery.
-
Eye measurements: It will determine the size of the cornea you need.
-
A review of all medications and supplements you are taking: You may need to stop taking certain medicines or supplements before or after the cornea transplant.
-
Treatment for other eye problems: Unrelated eye problems, such as infection or inflammation, can reduce the chances of a successful corneal transplant. Our specialists will treat these problems before the operation.
AFTER TRANSPLANT PROCEDURE
Once the cornea transplant is complete, you can expect to:
-
You receive more medication: Drops and sometimes oral medications immediately after the cornea transplant and during recovery will help control infection, prevent swelling and pain.
-
Wear eye bandage: A bandage will protect the eye as it heals after surgery.
-
Protect your eye from injury: Do not overwork your eye after a corneal transplant until you resume normal activities. For the rest of your life, you will need to take extra precautions to avoid injuring your eyes.
-
Return for regular checks: Expect frequent eye exams in the first year after surgery.
VIEW CORRECTION AFTER PROCEDURE
Your vision may appear to be worse at first than before surgery because your eye is adjusting to your new cornea, and it may take a few months for your vision to improve. Once the outer layer of the cornea has healed, your ophthalmologist will make adjustments that can improve your vision, such as:
-
Correction of corneal unevenness (astigmatism): Stitches that hold the donor cornea in place can cause the cornea to sink and uneven, causing your vision to fade at certain points. Your doctor may correct some of these by releasing some stitches and tightening others.
-
Correction of vision problems: Refractive errors can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or, in some cases, laser surgery.
