LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat from certain areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms or neck, by shaping and contouring these areas.
Liposuction is not usually considered a general method or an alternative to weight loss. If you are overweight, you may lose more weight through diet and exercise or weight-loss procedures – such as gastric sleeve surgery – than you would through liposuction.
You may be a suitable candidate for liposuction if you have too much fat in certain places but have a stable body weight.
PREPARATION
Before the procedure, discuss with your surgeon what to expect from the operation. The surgeon will review your medical history and ask you about any medical conditions you have and any medications or supplements you may be taking. Our specialist will advise you to stop taking certain medicines, such as blood thinners at least three weeks before the operation. You may need some laboratory tests before the procedure.
Before the liposuction, the surgeon will mark circles and lines on the areas of the body that presents interest. Photos will also be taken so that before and after images can be compared. How the liposuction procedure is performed depends on the specific technique used. The beautician will select the appropriate technique based on the objectives and the areas of your body.
POST-PROCEDURE
Expect slight swelling and bruising after the procedure. Our specialist may prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
After the procedure, the surgeon may leave your incisions open and may place temporary leaks to encourage fluid drainage. You will usually need to wear compression garments to help reduce swelling for a few weeks.
You may have to wait a few days before returning to work and a few weeks before resuming your normal activities – including exercise.
It is natural for the skin to lose its firmness with age, but the results of liposuction are generally long lasting as long as you maintain your weight. If you gain weight after liposuction, the distribution of fat may change.
