MASTECTOMY AND RECONSTRUCTION
If your doctor has advised you to have a mastectomy, you may be wondering about breast reconstruction. Reconstructive surgery can be performed at the same time as the mastectomy operation.
This procedure is called Immediate Reconstruction.
Immediate reconstruction offers the benefit of eliminating at least one operation. It also allows you to continue your daily life faster. There is also the psychological benefit of waking up from a mastectomy with your new breasts intact.
Moreover, studies show that the cosmetic result of immediate reconstruction is often better than subsequent breast reconstruction.
The decision to do both at the same time is influenced by many factors. You will need to involve your breast cancer surgeon, oncology team and plastic surgeon to decide if this is the right option for you.
USEFUL INFORMATION
Immediate reconstruction with implants can be performed in several ways. The technique may depend on:
-
the preferences and experience of the plastic surgeon
-
the condition of your tissue
-
the kind of breast cancer you may have
At the time of mastectomy, some plastic surgeons will lift the pectoral muscle, located just behind the breast, and place the implant behind the extra layer of tissue.
Others will place the implant immediately behind the skin. Some surgeons will also use a layer of artificial skin in the chest pocket to provide extra protection and support.
POST-PROCEDURE
The duration of these surgeries can last from 2 to 3 hours for a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction of the implant, or 6-12 hours for mastectomy and reconstruction with your own tissue.
Upon completion of reconstruction, the breast surgeon will attach temporary drainage tubes. This means that it is making sure that any excess fluid has where to go during healing. Your chest will be covered with a bandage.
Because the nerves are cut during the operation, you may have numbness along the incision site. Scar tissue can build up around the incision site, causing pressure or pain.
