Zirconia crowns fail in a small number of predictable ways: decay at the margin where the crown meets the tooth, gum recession that exposes the join, chipping of the surface layer, debonding, wear on the opposing teeth, and shade mismatch. None of these is a reason to avoid zirconia — it is one of the most durable materials in routine use. But almost all of them are decided at the planning and fitting stage rather than years later, which means most are preventable.

First, what zirconia is good at
Zirconium dioxide is a ceramic with high fracture resistance. It is used where strength matters — back teeth, long-span bridges, full-arch work, and patients who grind. It does not corrode, it does not have a metal substructure showing as a dark line at the gum, and it is well tolerated.
The trade-offs below are the price of that strength, not evidence that the material is a poor choice.
The six problems, in the order they actually occur
1. Decay at the margin
The most common reason a crown of any material has to be replaced. The crown itself cannot decay; the natural tooth underneath it can, and it starts at the join. A margin that does not fit precisely, or one that sits below an inflamed gum line, gives bacteria somewhere to sit.
What prevents it: an accurate impression or scan, a well-finished margin, healthy gums before the crown goes on, and interdental cleaning afterwards.
2. Gum recession exposing the join
Over years the gum can recede and reveal the margin. On a metal-backed crown this shows as a grey line; on zirconia it shows as a visible step or a colour change. Cosmetic rather than structural — but it is a common reason people replace work that is otherwise sound.
3. Chipping of the layering ceramic
Layered zirconia has a softer aesthetic porcelain fired over a strong core. That outer layer can chip, particularly under grinding. Monolithic zirconia — milled from one solid block — largely removes this failure mode at some cost to translucency. Which one you are getting is a fair question to ask, and it is not always volunteered.
4. Debonding
The crown comes away intact. Usually a bonding or preparation issue rather than a material one: too little retention on the prepared tooth, or contamination during cementation. Normally re-cementable if the crown and the tooth are undamaged.
5. Wear on the opposing teeth
Zirconia is harder than natural enamel. Poorly polished zirconia can abrade the natural teeth it bites against. Well-polished zirconia is much gentler. This is a finishing-quality problem, and it is invisible to the patient at handover — which is exactly why it is worth asking about.
6. Shade mismatch
Zirconia is more opaque than natural enamel and than lithium disilicate. On a single front tooth beside natural teeth, matching is genuinely difficult, and a crown that looks flat or too bright is a common complaint. On a full arch, where every unit is the same material, the problem largely disappears — which is one reason full-arch cases look more convincing than single-unit ones.
Sensitivity after fitting
Some sensitivity to cold and pressure in the first days or weeks is common and usually settles. Sensitivity that persists beyond a few weeks, or pain on biting, is not something to wait out — it can indicate a high bite, a marginal gap, or a tooth that has not tolerated the preparation. Have it looked at.

Neither is “better”. They answer different questions. A treatment plan that uses one material for every tooth in the mouth regardless of position is worth querying.
