BREAST IMPLANT
Breast implant – also known as breast augmentation – is a surgery to increase the size of the breasts. It involves placing breast implants under the breast tissue or chest muscles.
For some women, breast augmentation is a way to feel more confident. For others, it is part of breast reconstruction for various ailments.

PRE-PROCEDURE
You will consult with a plastic surgeon about your preferences for the size, sensation and appearance of the breasts. The surgeon will describe specific types of implants – smooth or textured, round or teardrop-shaped, saline or silicone – as well as options for surgical techniques.

Breast implants will not stop your breasts from sagging. To correct sagging breasts, you may need breast lifting in addition to breast augmentation.
Breast implants are not guaranteed to last a lifetime. The average lifespan of an implant is 10 years. Breasts will continue to age, and factors such as weight gain or weight loss may change the way they look.
Breast implants may prevent breastfeeding. While most women are able to breastfeed successfully after breast augmentation, for some breastfeeding may be a challenge.
You may need analyses before the surgery. Your doctor may ask you for a mammography, he can also adjust ongoing medical prescriptions (if any), before the operation. For example, it is important to avoid aspirin or other medications that may increase bleeding.
POST-PROCEDURE
Pain and swelling are possible a few weeks after surgery. Bruising is also possible. Expect scars to disappear over time, but not completely.
While you are healing, it can help to wear a compression bandage or sports bra for extra support and positioning of breast implants. Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication.
Follow your surgeon’s instructions to return to normal activities. If you do not have a physically demanding job, you may be able to return to work in a few weeks. Avoid activities that could raise your heart rate or blood pressure – at least two weeks. As you heal, remember that your breasts will be sensitive to physical contact or sudden movements.
