Crowns and veneers fitted in Turkey typically last 10 to 15 years, and well-made veneers on well-cared-for teeth can last longer. That figure has nothing to do with Turkey. It is the ordinary lifespan of the same materials fitted anywhere in the world, and it depends far more on three things than on the country: which material was used, how much of the natural tooth was removed to fit it, and how the mouth is cared for afterwards.
The question people usually mean when they ask this is a different one, and it deserves a straight answer: what happens when they need replacing? That is where a lot of the difficulty with treatment abroad actually sits, and it is worth understanding before you book anything — with us or with anyone else.
What “Turkey teeth” actually means
“Turkey teeth” is not a treatment. It is a nickname British media gave to a look — a full arch of uniform, very white teeth — and to the fact that a lot of people fly to Turkey to get it.
Underneath the nickname there are two quite different procedures, and the difference is the single most important thing on this page:
- Crowns. The natural tooth is reduced on all sides so a cap can be cemented over it. This is a substantial and irreversible reduction of healthy tooth structure. Most of what the press calls “Turkey teeth” is full-arch crowns.
- Veneers. A thin facing is bonded to the front surface of the tooth. Preparation is much more conservative, and in some cases minimal.
Both can look identical when finished. They are not the same commitment. If a treatment plan you have been sent does not clearly say crowns or veneers, and how much preparation each tooth needs, that is the first question to ask — before price, before dates, before flights.

How long each material lasts

These are ranges reported in the clinical literature for the materials themselves, not promises about any individual case. Two people with identical work fitted on the same day can be a decade apart in outcome.
What actually decides whether yours last
Case selection. Crowns fitted over teeth that were already decayed, or over gums that were inflamed at the time, start with a shorter clock. A proper assessment before treatment — X-rays, a periodontal check — is not an upsell, it is the thing that determines the lifespan.
How much tooth was removed. Aggressive preparation is the failure mode the British press has been reporting on. A tooth reduced more than it needed to be is more likely to need root canal treatment later. There is no way to undo it.
The margin. The join between crown and tooth is where decay starts. A well-fitting margin and healthy gums buy years; a poor one does the opposite.
Grinding. If you clench or grind at night, any ceramic work is under load it was not designed for. A night guard is cheap and is routinely the difference between ten years and four.
Hygiene and reviews. Brushing, interdental cleaning, and a hygienist appointment on the normal schedule. Ceramic does not decay. The tooth holding it does.

On the same schedule as crowns or veneers fitted anywhere: typically once every 10 to 15 years, and sooner if a margin fails, a unit fractures, or decay develops underneath. Replacement is not a one-off event — once a tooth has been crowned, it will need a crown for the rest of its life. That is the part worth planning for financially, not just the first fitting.
Will UK dentists touch Turkey teeth?
Yes. A GDC-registered dentist can examine, maintain and repair work carried out abroad, in the same way as work carried out in the UK. What you should not assume is that it will be free: treatment on the NHS depends on clinical need, and replacing sound cosmetic work generally is not covered. Some UK practices are reluctant to take on the guarantee for another clinic’s work, which is a commercial position rather than a clinical one — it is worth asking your own dentist before you travel, not after.
Is Turkey teeth a good idea?
It depends entirely on which procedure you are actually being offered and why. Veneers on healthy teeth for a cosmetic reason, planned properly, are a reasonable thing to do in Turkey or in Britain. A full arch of crowns on healthy teeth, chosen from a photograph, is a much larger and irreversible decision — and it is the one that produces most of the regret stories. The country is not the variable. The plan is.
What happens to Turkey teeth after 10 years?
Most are still in place and functioning. Some will have needed a unit replaced, a margin repaired, or root canal treatment on a tooth that did not tolerate the preparation. The realistic picture at ten years is maintenance, not catastrophe — provided the work was appropriate in the first place and has been looked after.
What to ask before you book, anywhere
- Crowns or veneers? In writing, per tooth.
- How much preparation? Ask for it in plain language, not just a code.
- What is the material? Zirconia, lithium disilicate and composite behave differently and last differently.
- What happens if something fails at year three? Who pays, who fits it, and do you have to fly back.
- Who assesses me before treatment, and when? X-rays and a gum assessment before anything is prepared — not on the morning of the fitting.
- What does the price include? Consultation, imaging, temporaries, the final units, and any follow-up.
If a clinic cannot answer these in writing before you pay a deposit, that is your answer.
