BREAST CANCER TREATMENT
General surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists work together to plan breast cancer treatment. Typically, the patient is first evaluated by a surgeon. Additionally, psychologists and psychiatrists assess the patient both before and after treatment.
Surgical treatment, drug therapy (chemotherapy), hormone therapy (treatment with hormonal medication), radiotherapy, and biological therapies are all used in the treatment of breast cancer. The priorities and the scope of each of these therapies are determined by the clinical stage of the disease.
Starting chemotherapy before surgery allows monitoring of the tumor’s response to the treatment. Surgery is performed after completing the neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimen and helps remove a significant portion of the tumor. If no response is achieved after two chemotherapy sessions, the treatment is adjusted and the patient is re-evaluated. For patients with progressive tumors unresponsive to chemotherapy, the tumor is either fully removed surgically or, if the tumor has spread to a degree that makes removal impossible, radiotherapy is applied.
