WHAT IS A COCHLEAR IMPLANT?
A cochlear implant (bionic ear implant) is a computerized device that can restore useful hearing for people with severe or profound hearing loss (sensorineural deafness). It is the only medical technology capable of restoring one of the five human senses – the sense of hearing.
People who benefit little from hearing aids are considered candidates for cochlear implants. Globally, more than 400,000 children and adults benefit from cochlear implants. Unlike a hearing aid, which amplifies incoming sound, a cochlear implant converts sound waves into electrical signals.
Listening devices require the function of hair cells in the inner ear, while cochlear implants bypass the damaged hair cells and transform speech and environmental sounds into electrical signals that are sent to the auditory nerve.
TWO MAIN COMPONENTS
An internal component that consists of a small electronic device surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear, connected to electrodes that are inserted into the cochlea.
An external component, worn behind the ear, which consists of a speech processor, a microphone, and a battery compartment.
The microphone captures sound, allowing the speech processor to translate it into distinct electrical signals. These signals or “codes” travel along a thin cable over the head and are transmitted through the skin via radio waves to the electrodes implanted in the cochlea. The electrode signals stimulate auditory nerve fibers to send information to the brain, where it is interpreted as meaningful sound.
COCHLEAR IMPLANT SURGERY
The surgical procedure for a cochlear implant is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. An incision is made behind the ear to open the mastoid bone that leads to the middle ear space. Once the middle ear space is exposed, an opening is made into the cochlea and the implant’s electrodes are inserted. The electronic device at the base of the electrode set is then placed under the skin behind the ear.
This surgical procedure can be performed on patients over 12 months old who do not benefit from hearing aids.
