CORNEA TRANSPLANT
A cornea transplant (keratoplasty) is a surgical procedure to replace part of your cornea with corneal tissue from a donor. The cornea is the transparent surface of the eye, dome-shaped, which accounts for a large part of the eye’s focusing power.
A cornea transplant can restore vision, reduce pain, and improve the appearance of a damaged or diseased cornea.
A cornea transplant is most often used to restore vision in a person with a damaged cornea. A cornea transplant can also relieve pain or other symptoms associated with corneal diseases.

PREPARATION FOR CORNEA TRANSPLANT
Before your cornea transplant surgery, you will go through the following steps:
An eye exam. Your ophthalmologist will check for any conditions that could cause complications after surgery.
Eye measurements. The correct size of the donor cornea needed for your eye will be determined.
A review of all medications and supplements you are taking. You may need to stop taking certain medications or supplements before or after the transplant.
Treatment of other eye conditions. Unrelated issues, such as infections or inflammation, may reduce the success of a cornea transplant. Our specialists will address these problems prior to surgery.

AFTER THE TRANSPLANT
Once the cornea transplant is completed, you can expect to:
Receive additional medications. Eye drops and sometimes oral medications given right after the cornea transplant and during recovery will help control infection, reduce swelling, and relieve pain.
Wear an eye bandage. A bandage can protect the eye as it heals after surgery.
Protect your eye from injury. Avoid overexerting the eye after the transplant until you return to normal activities. For the rest of your life, you may need to take extra precautions to prevent eye injury.
Return for regular check-ups. Expect to have frequent eye exams during the first year after surgery.

VISION CORRECTION AFTER SURGERY
Your vision may initially be worse than before the surgical procedure because the eye is adjusting to the new cornea. It may take several months for your vision to improve.
Once the outer layer of the cornea has healed, your ophthalmologist may make adjustments that can improve your vision, such as:
Correction of corneal irregularities (astigmatism): The stitches that hold the donor cornea in place can cause dips and irregularities in the cornea, making your vision blurry in certain areas. Your doctor may correct some of these issues by removing or tightening certain stitches.
Correction of vision problems: Refractive errors can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or in some cases, laser surgery.
