WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR EPILEPSY? VNS THERAPY
VNS Therapy® (also known as vagus nerve stimulation) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an add-on therapy for adults and children aged 4 and above. It is approved for the treatment of focal or partial seizures that do not respond to anti-seizure medications.
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can prevent or reduce epileptic seizures by sending regular, mild electrical impulses to the brain through the vagus nerve.
The therapy involves a device implanted under the skin in the left chest area. An electrode or wire is connected to the generator device and placed under the skin. The wire is attached to or wrapped around the vagus nerve in the neck.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a type of neuromodulation. It is designed to change the way brain cells function by electrically stimulating certain areas involved in seizures.
The vagus nerve is part of the autonomic nervous system, which controls body functions that are not under voluntary control (such as heart rate and breathing). The vagus nerve sends information from the brain to other areas of the body. It also carries information from the body to the brain.
Studies have shown that VNS can help control seizures by:
Increasing blood flow to key areas of the brain
Increasing levels of neurotransmitters important for seizure control
Changing EEG patterns during a seizure
In newer VNS models (AspireSR® and SenTivaTM), a rapid increase in heart rate can be detected. This triggers an extra burst of stimulation to help stop seizures. These models are especially useful for people who don’t know when a seizure is starting, if seizures are not being monitored, or if they occur during the night.
IMPORTANT ASPECTS
The device is programmed in the clinic to deliver impulses or stimulation at regular intervals. A person does not need to do anything for the device to work.
A person with a VNS device is usually not aware of the stimulation while it is functioning.
If a person knows when a seizure is about to occur, they can swipe a magnet over the generator on the left side of the chest to send an extra burst of stimulation to the brain. For some individuals, this can help stop the seizure.
