WHEN IS A LIVER TRANSPLANT NECESSARY?
Even when inflammation is present due to alcohol consumption or fatty liver disease, or when infections such as hepatitis occur, long-term congestion or bile duct stones exist, or in cases of metabolic diseases, tumors, or congenital enzyme deficiencies, patients can still live a normal life for a long period as the disease progresses slowly. However, once liver failure begins to manifest, it can lead to itching, fluid in the lungs (edema), abdominal ascites, severe hepatitis, bleeding, and anemia.
In advanced liver disease, changes in personality and behavior may be observed. Weight loss, reduced urine output, and fatigue can progress to coma. These symptoms indicate that the patient’s liver can no longer meet the body’s needs. This condition, known as “liver failure,” leaves liver transplantation as the only option for the patient.

OUTSTANDING RESULTS IN THE GOLD STANDARD – ORTHOTOPIC LIVER TRANSPLANT
In organ transplant centers, liver transplants are performed using both living and deceased donors. The method applied in these surgeries is the orthotopic liver transplant, a technique regarded as the “gold standard” worldwide.
Using this modern technique, the large veins located behind the liver are preserved with the help of surgical clamps before the transplant procedure. To ensure the success of this operation, a highly skilled surgical team and advanced medical equipment are required.
As with any transplant, liver transplants must be performed in hospitals and surgical rooms equipped with the most advanced technology. When the transplant is performed from a living donor, half of the liver is transplanted into the recipient.
Thus, the surgical procedure is highly demanding from a technical standpoint. After the transplant, while the living donors can be discharged within 6–7 days, recipients must stay in the hospital for 15–20 days.
The transplanted liver then regenerates and rapidly grows to a sufficient size to meet the recipient’s physiological needs.
