KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION

State-of-the-art technology and the highest quality services

The operating rooms and intensive care units in organ transplant centers are equipped with the most recent technological infrastructure. Fully laparoscopic techniques reduce the need for intensive care for the donor. Nevertheless, for liver and some kidney transplant recipients, fully equipped intensive care units are critically important.

The donor protection program (monitoring and caring for the donor after the transplant) is one of the unique services offered by the International Hospital Transplant Center.

Organ transplant centers are fully committed to the highest moral and ethical standards in organ donation and transplantation. They follow the principles of the Istanbul Declaration on organ trafficking and transplant tourism, adopted by the Transplantation Society and the International Society of Nephrology, as well as the Declaration of Consensus of the Amsterdam Forum, adopted by the Transplant Society on the care of living kidney donors. The center also meets the standards of the Turkish coordination system for organ and tissue transplants.

WHEN IS A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT NECESSARY?

Even when chronic kidney disease is present due to conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, recurrent urinary tract infections, congenital malformations, kidney stones, tumors, or certain autoimmune and metabolic diseases, patients may still lead a relatively normal life for many years while kidney function declines slowly. However, once kidney failure begins to manifest, it can cause swelling (edema), fatigue, difficulty controlling blood pressure, anemia, nausea, and fluid buildup in the body.

In advanced kidney disease, additional complications may occur, such as confusion, changes in mood, seizures, or even coma. These symptoms indicate that the patient’s kidneys can no longer meet the body’s needs. This condition, known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure, makes a kidney transplant the only viable option for the patient.

Experienced Team

Our Organ Transplant Centers have all the necessary technologies for kidney transplantation. The team also has extensive experience in all types of operations and procedures, including complex cases of patients with severe chronic kidney disease and related complications.

INFRASTRUCTURE BASED ON INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

Operating rooms, laboratories, and intensive care units are the most important areas in the field of organ transplantation. Advanced technology and high-quality standards recognized internationally allow both patients and organ donors to benefit from the best medical services and care in laboratories, intensive care units, and operating rooms.

Specialists with international experience perform procedures using high-tech methods. One such example is the removal of a kidney through a simple 5 cm incision, performed entirely using laparoscopic surgery. These advanced medical techniques allow donors to be discharged within 24 hours after surgery and to resume work within a week. The recipient can typically be discharged from the hospital in about a week.

LAPAROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES

Fully laparoscopic techniques used in surgery allow for minimal hospital stay for donors. These techniques are used only in centers with experienced and expert staff and offer many advantages over open surgery procedures. For example, while open surgeries involve incisions of 15–20 cm, laparoscopy allows incisions of only 5 cm in length. The procedure is performed through a camera inserted into the abdomen, which allows high visual control. A smaller operating area involves less postoperative pain and smaller surgical wounds with lower risk.

The absence of large surgical scars reduces cosmetic concerns and lowers the risk of hernia, numbness, surgical site infections, and pulmonary embolism. With laparoscopic techniques, donors are able to mobilize and begin taking fluids on the evening of the surgery, start consuming solid foods, and be discharged the next day.
