LABIAPLASTY

A Labiaplasty is a procedure to reduce the size of the labia minora – the skin flaps on each side of the vaginal opening.

It should not be done on girls under the age of 18, as the vagina lips continue to develop beyond puberty until early adulthood.

Some women want a labiaplasty because they don’t like the look of their lips. It is, however, completely normal to have visible folds of skin around the opening of the vagina.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Labiaplasty can be performed using either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.

It involves shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips. The unwanted tissue is removed using a scalpel or laser. The free edge will be stitched with fine, absorbable sutures.

The entire procedure takes approximately 1 to 2 hours. You will be discharged the same day. You may need up to 2 weeks of leave to recover. It may take several months for the skin to fully heal.

During this time, you should:

  • keep the area clean and free of infection;

  • wear cotton underwear and loose clothing to prevent friction;

  • avoid sexual activity for approximately 6 weeks;

  • avoid physical activity for 6 to 12 weeks;

  • use sanitary pads instead of tampons for a few weeks.
